Italy Edges Israel 4-5 in Thrilling World Cup Qualifier, Climbing to Second in Group
BUDAPEST – Italy secured a dramatic 4-5 victory against Israel in a World Cup qualifying match played in Budapest on September 6th, propelling them to second place in their group.The Azzurri now stand on equal points with Israel, but with a game in hand.
The match, held in Hungary due to security concerns, was marked by a rollercoaster of emotions for both teams. Italy initially struggled, conceding an own goal from Manuel Locatelli following a cross from Biton, giving Israel an early lead. Moise Kean equalized with a precise finish after a Dimarco assist.
Israel regained the lead early in the second half through Dor Peretz, but Kean quickly responded, again assisted by Giacomo Raspadori. Italy then surged ahead with goals from Matteo Politano, assisted by Raspadori, and Davide Frattesi, assisted by Raspadori – marking Raspadori’s third assist of the night. Though, Israel fought back to level the score.
The winning goal arrived in the 91st minute from Sandro Tonali, sparking jubilant celebrations.
Despite the victory, Italy coach Luciano Spalletti expressed concerns about his team’s performance. “There was to die for today – they surprised us a little, the leg was not very brilliant and in the second game there is. We keep the victory, but we are crazy, we took absurd goals and we have to improve. We are too fragile, the boys know it, but it’s my problem. At least we reacted to every slap and it is important: there has been a heart, there was a desire to react, but it cannot be granted so much,” he stated.
Spalletti also noted an “embarrassing approach” and tactical difficulties, highlighting the association of Israel’s team. The win places Italy in a strong position to qualify for the 2026 World Cup, but significant improvements are needed, according to the coach. Italy will face North Macedonia on September 9th.
