While not an official feature of the Meta-owned messaging platform, the customization has gained traction in recent weeks, particularly in Argentina where the capybara is known as the “carpincho.”
The trend centers around altering the WhatsApp icon on a user’s phone’s home screen. It relies on third-party Android customization tools, specifically launchers, and PNG images with transparent backgrounds to achieve a clean visual integration. The appeal stems from the capybara’s globally recognized calm demeanor and its frequent appearance in viral memes and videos, offering users a way to inject a sense of serenity into their digital communication space.
“Capybara mode” is not a native WhatsApp function, nor is it delivered through an app update. Instead, it’s an aesthetic customization achieved through applications like Nova Launcher, which replace the default Android home screen and allow for extensive visual adjustments. Nova Launcher, and similar tools, enable users to change icons, fonts, backgrounds, and widgets without affecting the core functionality of installed apps.
To activate “Capybara Mode,” users first necessitate to obtain a suitable capybara image, ideally in PNG format with a transparent background. This image can be downloaded from the internet or created using AI tools. Once downloaded, users install Nova Launcher from the Google Play Store and set it as their default launcher. With Nova Launcher configured, users can then long-press the WhatsApp icon on their home screen, select “Edit,” and then choose to replace the icon with the downloaded capybara image, adjusting its size as desired.
The capybara, originating in South America, is the world’s largest rodent. Its name comes from the Guaraní language, meaning “master of the grasses” or “eater of grasses,” and they are commonly found near swamps, and ponds. The animal’s affable nature and distinctive behavior have fueled its popularity and inspired the customization trend.
It’s important to note that, as a third-party solution, “Capybara Mode” is not supported or guaranteed by Meta. But, using reliable apps and secure image sources, the customization is a common practice within the Android ecosystem. Users can revert to the original WhatsApp icon by simply uninstalling Nova Launcher, which automatically restores the phone’s interface to its factory settings or previously established launcher.
