Daniel Day-Lewis is clarifying his previous statements about retiring from acting as he prepares for his return to the screen in the upcoming film “Anemone,” co-written with and starring his son, Ronan. The notoriously selective actor, who announced his retirement in 2017, revealed he hoped declaring he was finished would prevent future enticements, but ultimately returned to filmmaking for this project.
Day-Lewis, a three-time Academy Award winner, previously expressed feeling “hollowed out” by aspects of the acting profession despite his enduring love for the work itself. He explained that the lifestyle surrounding acting was the source of his discomfort, a feeling that persisted even as recently as his initial retirement proclamation.”There’s something about that process that left me feeling hollowed out at the end of it,” he said, according to USA Today.
“Anemone,” set for release October 3,explores “the intricate relationships between fathers, sons and brothers, and the dynamics of familial bonds,” according to Focus Features. The film also stars Sean Bean and Samantha Morton. day-Lewis joked about his return, stating, “just shows I’m not as proud as I like to think I am!”
Prior to his hiatus, Day-Lewis earned Oscar wins for his performances in “My Left Foot,” “There Will be Blood,” and “Lincoln,” and received nominations for “In the Name of the Father,” “Gangs of New York,” and “Phantom Thread.”
