Netflix Acquires Warner Bros. Discovery: Streaming Industry Shakeup

by Priya Shah – Business Editor December 6, 2025

Netflix to Acquire Warner Bros. Studios and Streaming Division in Landmark Deal

WASHINGTON – Netflix has emerged as the winning ⁢bidder to acquire Warner Bros. Discovery’s (WBD) studio⁢ assets and streaming division for nearly ⁢$28 per share, ⁤surpassing a $24-per-share offer from Paramount Skydance, sources confirmed Thursday. The deal, expected‍ to close within 12 to 18 months, will⁣ significantly expand Netflix’s content library, though it will not include WBD’s cable TV assets.

The ‌acquisition marks ‍a major shift in the media ⁢landscape, bringing ⁤iconic franchises like Harry Potter and DC Comics under the ⁤Netflix umbrella. Warner bros. Discovery is spinning off its⁢ global networks ‌unit, Discovery global – which includes CNN, TBS, ⁢and TNN – into ⁣a separate publicly⁤ traded company, anticipated in the third quarter of 2026,⁣ prior to the deal’s completion. This separation allows Netflix to focus on‍ the studio and streaming components of WBD.

Netflix will⁤ gain access to Warner Bros.’ film and television production studios, and also WBD’s streaming service, HBO Max, which boasts nearly⁢ 130 million subscribers. However, the deal specifically excludes the cable networks ‍slated for spinoff.

The agreement includes ample financial safeguards: Netflix has offered⁣ a $5.8 billion breakup fee should regulators block the acquisition, while Warner Bros. Discovery will pay Netflix $2.8 billion if it delays or terminates⁤ the deal.

Opposition to the⁢ deal has already surfaced. David Ellison, CEO of Paramount Skydance, recently met with Trump administration officials and lawmakers to argue against the acquisition, leveraging his father, Oracle CEO Larry Ellison’s, close ties to former President Trump.

The ⁣deal is anticipated to face rigorous⁤ antitrust scrutiny in‌ both the⁢ U.S. and Europe, given Netflix’s position as the ⁣world’s largest streaming service. The acquisition of ⁤a major competitor ⁤like Warner Bros. Discovery raises concerns about market dominance.

The path to this deal has⁣ been complex.AT&T initially acquired Warner Bros. through ‍its 2018 merger with Time Warner. Subsequently, AT&T spun off WarnerMedia and⁢ merged it⁤ with Discovery in 2022.Warner Bros. ‌Discovery then initiated a sale process in October 2025.

Fackham Hall’: A Silly Send-Up of British Period Dramas

by Julia Evans – Entertainment Editor December 6, 2025
written by Julia Evans – Entertainment Editor

‘fackham Hall’ Signals a Resurgence of ‍Goofy,⁣ Unapologetic Spoof Comedy

A new British comedy, “Fackham ⁢Hall,” is tapping into a growing appetite⁢ for broad, silly humor, marking a potential shift away from ⁤teh “naturalistic” observational comedy that dominated ⁣recent years. The film,⁢ featuring a vicar prone‍ to wildly inappropriate‌ pronouncements, generated significant buzz with its trailer, racking up over 7.3 million views in its first 24 hours – a record for independent ⁤distributor Bleecker Street.

The success of “Fackham Hall” comes as ⁤audiences appear to be revisiting a ⁣fondness⁣ for the type of over-the-top spoof comedy ‍that was previously out of favor. According to comedy⁤ writer Richard⁤ Hassenger, recent trends saw ‍narratives⁢ dismissed ⁢as “some shoddy excuse for a narrative,” while shows like the ⁢American “The Office”⁢ gained traction with a more observational style. Now, though,⁤ tastes are “oscillating back and forth,” with a renewed interest in ‍”goofier, joyful and unashamedly stupid” entertainment, says writer Adam Inman.

The film’s writers, Andrew Dawson among them, reportedly went through 35 to 40 drafts ⁣of the script, crafting nearly 20 choice lines for each joke. Dawson notes that the film is‌ packed with layered jokes and visual gags, rewarding repeat viewings.⁤ “There’s a lot of detailed jokes that you can spot in the⁤ background as well: signs, record labels, book covers,” he saeid.

Cox Communications Faces $1 Billion Lawsuit Over Failure to Stop Music Piracy

by Rachel Kim – Technology Editor December 2, 2025
written by Rachel Kim – Technology Editor

Supreme Court Weighs Limits on ⁤ISP Liability in ⁤Music ⁤piracy Case

WASHINGTON - December 1,2025 - The Supreme Court heard arguments today in Cox Communications v. Sony Music Entertainment, a case⁤ with perhaps far-reaching implications for music piracy ⁤and internet access. Justices grappled with ⁤how‌ to balance copyright ⁣protection⁢ with concerns about overbroad internet service provider ‍(ISP) liability and potential disruptions to service.

The case‍ centers ⁢on whether cox Communications can⁣ be held responsible for copyright infringement committed by its customers, even if ⁣the company⁤ doesn’t ⁣directly participate ⁢in the illegal activity. Sony Music alleges cox profited from widespread piracy on its network and failed to adequately respond to repeated notices of infringement.

During oral arguments, Justice Sonia Sotomayor⁤ expressed concern over ⁣evidence suggesting Cox did not act on notices from ‌an‍ antipiracy ⁢company regarding users downloading or distributing copyrighted music, ‍stating, “You did nothing.”

Cox’s attorney,Rosenkranz, argued that an ISP shouldn’t be liable for customer violations even with repeated⁣ notification. Justice ⁣Amy Coney Barrett challenged this‌ position, asking what incentive Cox would have ⁣to curb piracy if not⁢ held accountable. Rosenkranz⁤ responded that Cox aims to be a responsible corporate citizen.

The case has drawn meaningful attention from various stakeholders. The Department of Justice, tech companies X and Google, ⁢and the American Civil Liberties ‍Union have ‌filed‍ briefs supporting Cox. Deputy Solicitor General Malcom Stewart acknowledged‍ a ruling for Cox could reduce incentives ⁣to stop piracy, but⁢ argued this might be acceptable to prevent “extremely ‌overbroad” service terminations.

Justices Alito and Barrett raised concerns about the⁢ potential for the lower court’s decision to‌ threaten internet access for ⁣universities and⁤ entire regions. Paul Clement, representing ‌the record ‌labels, suggested ‌the ⁢court could create⁣ exceptions for such scenarios. He warned that a ⁤loss for ⁣the music industry would leave them with⁤ limited recourse against ‌mass piracy, calling‍ individual lawsuits a “teaspoon solution ‌to an ocean problem.”

The court is expected⁤ to issue a decision⁣ by the ‍end of June or early July. The ‍outcome will likely shape ⁢the future ⁤of ⁤copyright enforcement in⁤ the digital age and define the responsibilities of ISPs in policing their‍ networks.
