NATO Eyes Enhanced Drone Defenses as Zelensky Issues Stark Warning to Kremlin
BRUSSELS/KYIV – Amid escalating concerns over Russian aerial provocations, NATO is poised to discuss bolstering its anti-drone defenses for the first time this Friday, as European nations contemplate a coordinated “wall” against unmanned aerial threats. The move comes as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky issued a direct threat to Russian officials working in the Kremlin, warning they may soon need to seek shelter from potential attacks.
Zelensky’s stark statement, delivered in a Thursday interview, alluded to the possibility of strikes targeting those responsible for continuing the war. “That they inquire about where their anti-aircraft shelters are […] If they don’t stop war, they will need it,” he said. The Ukrainian leader’s renewed confidence appears bolstered by recent comments from former U.S. President Donald Trump, who dismissed Russia as a ”paper tiger” and suggested Ukraine could still achieve victory.
The heightened alert reflects a growing awareness of evolving military threats. Germany announced plans to invest 35 billion euros by 2030 in space defense capabilities to counter Russia and China, including a significant investment in drone technology.
French President Emmanuel Macron expressed optimism regarding shifting U.S. support for Ukraine, stating that Trump has observed “the spirit of seriousness of Europeans and their commitment” as well as “the heroism of the Ukrainians.” Macron believes this has brought Trump “closer to Ukraine, Europeans, than he has ever been.”
Further signaling strengthened ties between Washington and Kyiv, Zelensky announced Ukraine anticipates the delivery of long-range American weapons capable of striking targets within Russia. These developments underscore a rapidly evolving security landscape as the conflict in Ukraine continues.
