Apple’s Vision Pro headset is now available for pre-order in the United States, with shipments beginning February 2nd. The highly anticipated spatial computing device, first announced in june 2023, marks Apple’s entry into a new product category. Priced at $3,499, the Vision Pro offers a blend of digital content and the physical world, controlled through a user’s eyes, hands, and voice.
The Vision pro features a custom Apple M2 chip and the new R1 chip, designed to process input from its 12 cameras, five sensors, and six microphones. This allows for real-time interaction with the environment and digital elements. The headset boasts a micro-OLED display system with 23 million pixels across two displays, delivering visuals with more pixels than a 4K TV for each eye. It also includes a 3D spatial audio system.
Users can navigate the Vision Pro’s interface by looking at elements to select them, tapping their fingers to click, and flicking their wrist to scroll. The device supports external keyboards and trackpads, and can be paired with Mac computers for a wireless, high-resolution display experience. The Vision Pro’s operating system, visionOS, is designed to enable users to interact with apps in a three-dimensional space. Apple emphasizes its potential for productivity, entertainment, and interaction, with features like FaceTime spatial video calls and the ability to watch movies on a virtual screen up to 100 feet wide. The device is powered by an external battery pack that connects via a braided cable and provides up to two hours of use, or longer with the adapter plugged in.
Pre-orders for the Vision Pro are exclusively through Apple’s website and the Apple Store app. Customers will need to use their iPhone to scan their head size and face shape to ensure a proper fit, with options for light seal and cushion sizes available.
