President Donald Trump stated that the ongoing military conflict with Iran constitutes “small potatoes” for the United States, even as the five-month campaign continues to exact a heavy toll on American forces. Despite the mounting casualties and a lack of signs indicating the war will conclude, Trump dismissed the scale of the operation during recent remarks.
Pickaxe Mountain Threats and Intelligence Tracking
The United States may soon target Iran’s heavily fortified underground nuclear site known as Pickaxe Mountain, according to statements made by Trump at the Oval Office and reported by Gulf News. Trump warned that intelligence agencies are closely monitoring movements around the site. “We may hit Pickaxe very soon because if there was anything going on with Pickaxe,” Trump said, adding that U.S. intelligence knows the movements of everyone at the location and across Iran. Pickaxe Mountain sits near the damaged Natanz uranium-enrichment facility and features two deeply buried tunnel systems. Israeli intelligence believes thousands of centrifuges have been relocated inside the underground complex, which is designed to resist conventional aerial bombardment.
Defending the Military Campaign and Regional Staks
Defending the five-month U.S. military intervention, Trump argued that the campaign successfully prevented Tehran from acquiring a nuclear weapon. According to Gulf News, Trump asserted that without American action, Israel, the Middle East, and potentially cities in Europe and the U.S. would have faced a severe threat. “We’re in five months now. And you know what we did in five months? They’re not going to have a nuclear weapon; that’s what we did,” Trump said.
Recent CENTCOM Strikes on Iranian Military Assets
The warnings regarding Pickaxe Mountain follow a wave of strikes completed by U.S. Central Command against Iranian military targets. According to CENTCOM and Gulf News, the operations targeted facilities associated with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, including air-defense installations, radar systems, maritime assets, mine-laying capabilities, and communications sites. CENTCOM stated the strikes were launched in response to recent attempted attacks by the IRGC against commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz and against U.S. service members. Trump noted that American forces destroyed sophisticated radar installations during the recent operations, wiping out radar systems brought in by Iran to replace previously knocked-out equipment.
