Trump Orders Iran Attack: Calls on Iranians to Overthrow Regime

TEHRAN, Iran — The United States and Israel launched coordinated military strikes against Iran early Saturday, February 28, 2026, initiating what the Pentagon has termed “Operation Epic Fury.” The attacks, targeting sites within Iran, came hours after President Donald Trump publicly addressed the Iranian people, urging them to overthrow their government.

In a video statement posted to Truth Social, Trump directly appealed to Iranian citizens, telling them to “seize control of [their] destiny.” He instructed them to seek shelter during the attacks, stating, “Stay sheltered. Don’t leave your home. It’s very dangerous outside. Bombs will be dropping everywhere. When we are finished, take over your government. It will be yours to take.” Trump framed the operation as a long-awaited response to the Iranian people’s desire for change, asserting that previous administrations had failed to provide adequate support. “For many years, you have asked for America’s help, but you never got it,” he said.

The strikes commenced just after 9 a.m. Local time, according to initial reports. Trump characterized the operation as a defensive measure, stating its purpose is to “defend the American people by eliminating imminent threats from the Iranian regime,” which he described as “vicious” and “very hard, terrible people.” He acknowledged the potential for American casualties but defended the mission as “noble,” arguing it was necessary to prevent a “wicked, radical dictatorship” from destabilizing the Middle East and threatening U.S. National security.

Trump reiterated his longstanding opposition to Iran’s nuclear program, stating, “It has always been the policy of the United States…that this terrorist regime can never have a nuclear weapon. I’ll say it again. They can never have a nuclear weapon.” He vowed to destroy Iran’s missile infrastructure and its navy, warning, “This regime will soon learn that no one should challenge the strength and might of the United States Armed Forces.” He also called on members of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard, Iran’s armed forces, and police to surrender, offering immunity in exchange for laying down their weapons.

The military action follows a period of escalating tensions and failed negotiations between the U.S. And Iran. Trump had reportedly expressed dissatisfaction with the status of indirect nuclear talks, setting a deadline of roughly 10 to 15 days, expiring around February 19, for Iran to reach an agreement. BBC News reported that Tehran launched retaliatory strikes following the initial attacks.

According to CNN, 42 people have been killed in the conflict. Hindustan Times reports that the strikes have sparked conflict across the Middle East.

The situation remains fluid, with further developments expected in the coming hours. The extent of the damage inflicted by the strikes and the Iranian regime’s response are currently unknown.
