Trump-Backed Darline Graham Wins South Carolina GOP Senate Runoff

August 26, 2026 Emma Walker – News Editor News

On August 25, 2026, appointed South Carolina Senator Darline Graham secured a Republican primary runoff victory, capturing 52.5 percent of the vote against Representative Ralph Norman at 47.6 percent, according to The Associated Press. The win secures her spot on the November ballot for a full six-year term, validating a high-stakes intervention by President Donald Trump in a deeply contested state race.

The Political Stakes and the Trump Endorsement Factor

The path to the nomination proved turbulent for Graham, who was appointed by South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster in July following the death of her older brother, Senator Lindsey Graham. According to reporting by NBC News, the primary field originally featured 10 Republican candidates, including Representative Russell Fry and former Governor Mark Sanford. Voters forced Graham into a runoff after some expressed skepticism over her lack of prior elected experience.

That political vulnerability became glaring during a debate against Norman when Graham was questioned about the South China Sea and Taiwan, answering simply, “I’m not that informed on national security.” Despite such missteps, President Trump moved quickly after her brother’s passing to issue a “complete and total endorsement” on Truth Social on July 17, while MAGA Inc. super PAC resources and a Myrtle Beach campaign rally bolstered her campaign infrastructure.

“I understand that she’s lost a brother and lost someone very special to her, and I sympathize with that, but at the same time, I don’t think that it’s necessary just to give it to her,” Republican voter Bob Howell told NBC News in Lexington, South Carolina. “I like President Trump, but I don’t think that that’s necessarily what sways my vote.”

Legislative Record and General Election Outlook

During her brief weeks in Washington, Graham centered her legislative efforts on foreign policy measures. According to NBC News, she played a central role in passing a sanctions package targeting Russia and Iran, a measure originally championed by her late brother and later renamed for him after Trump requested the inclusion of Iran provisions.

“I think I’ve accomplished a whole lot in three weeks,” Graham stated after casting her vote, highlighting the sanctions bill and her vote confirming Attorney General Todd Blanche. “I’m not being handed the seat. I realize that I have to earn votes, so I’m working really hard to do that.”

With the Republican primary runoff decided, Graham moves forward to face Democratic nominee Annie Andrews, a doctor, in November. Historical voting patterns in South Carolina favor the Republican nominee heavily, as a Democrat has not won a Senate seat in the state since Fritz Hollings’ re-election in 1998, per NBC News reporting.

Broader Implications for Presidential Endorsements

The victory provides a much-needed morale boost for Trump’s endorsement portfolio following recent primary setbacks across the country. Trump-backed candidates faced hurdles in several other jurisdictions earlier in the cycle, including gubernatorial races in Georgia, Iowa, and Wyoming, alongside congressional primary defeats in Tennessee and Florida.
