The Nordics are preparing for war

The Americanization of the Nordics: From Neutrality to NATO

October 25, 2026 Lucas Fernandez – World Editor World

Finland and Sweden have joined NATO, permitting United States forces unimpeded access to 47 military bases across the Nordic region, UnHerd reported.

Border Closures Leave Imatra Economy Struggling

The Finnish-Russian border once hummed with the high-speed Allegro train connecting Saint Petersburg to Helsinki in under four hours. Russian tourists regularly visited Imatra in South Karelia to shop, enjoy spa weekends, and view the Imatra Rapids. Today, that border traffic has completely stopped, and the Allegro train no longer runs. Finnish media recently labeled Imatra an emptying city. The sprawling Tsar Outlet Village remains deserted, while the local economy struggles with an unemployment rate of 16.4%, significantly higher than Finland’s national rate of just under 12%. South Karelia loses an estimated €1 million in tourism revenue each day.

The Finnish government closed the entire 1,340-kilometer border in late 2023. Helsinki accused Russia of weaponizing migrants by sending waves of asylum seekers across the frontier in retaliation for Finland joining NATO earlier that year following Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Construction on a 200-kilometer metal border fence finished last month. On Monday, the Finnish government announced the procurement of one million anti-personnel landmines.

From Cold War Non-Alignment to Atlantic Integration

During the Cold War, Finland managed relations with Moscow through pragmatic diplomacy, deterrence, and trade. Finnish President Urho Kekkonen viewed neutrality as a natural state born of geography and history. This position was anchored in the preamble to the 1948 Agreement of Friendship, Cooperation, and Mutual Assistance with the Soviet Union.

Sweden embraced non-alignment much earlier, following the 1808-9 Finnish War. Under Prime Minister Olof Palme, who was assassinated in 1986, Sweden pursued a radical independent internationalism that included protesting the Vietnam War and criticizing American bombings. However, Euro-Atlantic integration began quietly after the 1991 Soviet collapse. Finland purchased 64 McDonnell Douglas F/A-18 hornet fighter jets from the US in the early nineties. Both Finland and Sweden joined NATO’s Partnership for Peace program in 1994, joined the European Union in 1995, and deployed troops to NATO-led missions in Afghanistan and Kosovo. Russia’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine provided the final trigger for full NATO membership.

New Defense Agreements and Unimpeded Access

Defense Cooperation Agreements signed with Sweden, Finland, Norway, and Denmark have granted US armed forces unimpeded access to 47 military bases across the region. The surge began in 2021 when Norway and Washington signed a Supplementary Defense Cooperation Agreement giving US forces access to 12 military bases. In December 2023, the US signed new DCAs with Finland, Sweden, and Denmark, creating the 47-base network.

These agreements authorize the US to take necessary and proportionate measures to protect its forces in the immediate vicinity of bases, granting American military personnel police power over local civilians. The US also secures exclusive control over entry to specified military facilities, construction rights on Nordic soil, and jurisdiction over crimes committed by American soldiers.

Finland Lifts Ban on Nuclear Weapons

Stockholm International Peace Research Institute analysts have warned that deploying US missiles to Nordic bases close to Russian assets could provoke a crisis similar to the Cuban Missile Crisis. Both Finland and Sweden are dismantling their long-standing opposition to nuclear weapons. In June, Finland lifted its blanket ban on nuclear weapons by amending the Nuclear Energy Act of 1987, which had previously criminalized the import, transport, and possession of nuclear munitions on Finnish soil.

While many residents view these sacrifices as necessary to counter Russian aggression, others argue that the Nordic countries have surrendered their sovereignty to an unpredictable United States. The question of whether these measures permanently secure the region or leave it more dangerously exposed remains open as the accelerated Americanization of Nordic defense policy continues.
