Spanberger Accuses Trump of Self-Enrichment in SOTU Rebuttal | UPI.com

Virginia Gov. Abigail Spanberger accused President Donald Trump Tuesday of prioritizing personal enrichment over the needs of the American people, delivering a pointed response to his State of the Union address from Williamsburg, Virginia.

Speaking from the House of Burgesses, a site steeped in the history of American self-governance, Spanberger asserted that Trump’s policies have not improved the lives of ordinary Americans. She directly challenged the president’s optimistic portrayal of the U.S. Economy, stating, “We all know the answer is no,” when asked if Trump was working for the American people.

Spanberger, the first woman elected governor of Virginia, refrained from uttering Trump’s name throughout her 15-minute address, characterizing his speech as a familiar pattern of “lying, scapegoating and distracting.” She argued that Trump offered no viable solutions to the nation’s challenges, and, in many cases, was actively exacerbating them. “He tries to divide us. He tries to enrage us, to pit us against one another, neighbor against neighbor. And sometimes he succeeds,” she said.

The governor focused heavily on the economic impact of Trump’s trade policies, citing a Joint Economic Committee report that estimated American families have paid over $1,700 in tariff costs since Trump took office. She highlighted the damage inflicted on small businesses and farmers, even after the Supreme Court struck down the tariffs in a 6-3 ruling last Thursday, deeming Trump’s imposition of the tariffs as exceeding his authority. Spanberger warned that the president is already planning new tariffs, and expressed concern that Republicans in Congress are unwilling to challenge him on spending.

Spanberger also criticized Trump’s immigration policies, referencing a deployment of federal agents to Minneapolis. She, a former CIA agent, described the operation as involving poorly trained federal officers conducting warrantless arrests, resulting in the deaths of two U.S. Citizens. “And they have done it all with their faces masked from accountability,” she stated, arguing that such actions diverted resources from investigating serious crimes.

On the international stage, Spanberger accused Trump of weakening the United States’ global standing, alleging he had ceded economic and technological ground to Russia and China, and moved the country closer to conflict with Iran. She questioned whether Trump’s actions were benefiting the American people, suggesting instead that they primarily served his own interests, those of his family, and his associates.

Spanberger pointed to what she characterized as a pattern of corruption, citing the handling of the Epstein files, alleged cryptocurrency scams, and Trump’s acceptance of benefits from foreign leaders and wealthy individuals. “This is not what our founders envisioned. Not by a long shot,” she said.

Drawing a parallel between the present moment and the warnings of George Washington, Spanberger urged Americans to unite and demand more from their government. Even as she did not explicitly mention the upcoming midterm elections, her call to action resonated with the political climate. “We the people have the power to build change, the power to stand up for what is right, the power to demand more of our nation,” she concluded.
