Severe Weather Warning: 90km/h Winds and Heavy Rain Hit Eastern Australia

August 18, 2026 Emma Walker – News Editor News

Millions of residents along Australia’s eastern seaboard are bracing for a stormy week as a powerful high-pressure system barrels across multiple states, bringing destructive winds of up to 90 km/h and downpours reaching 40mm.

Melbourne and Victoria in the Path on Wednesday

Central Victoria faces the brunt of the severe weather setup on Wednesday. Metropolitan Melbourne sits directly in the path of the system, according to Weatherzone.

Forecasters warn that wind gusts could peak at 90 km/h. Heavy downpours are expected to hit vulnerable areas with up to 40mm of rain.

A Multistate Hazardous Weather Setup

The Bureau of Meteorology and regional forecasters indicate that the blocking high-pressure system will generate widespread hazardous conditions spanning four states.

Yahoo News Australia reports that the severe weather event places millions of Australians across the entire eastern seaboard on high alert for a persistently wet and windy week.

Moisture Funnels Eastward as Flooding Risks Rise

According to Nine.com.au, the system is projected to cause widespread havoc, bringing sudden squalls and localized flooding risks to low-lying regions.

Emergency Services on Standby for Transport Delays

The severe conditions are anticipated to persist as the weather front tracks further east throughout the remainder of the working week.
