A portrait by Gustav Klimt sold for $236 million at a Sotheby’s auction in New York on Thursday, establishing a new record for the most expensive artwork sold at auction, according to the auction house. The painting, ”Dame mit Fächer” (Lady with a Fan), depicts a woman in a lavishly decorated kimono and was completed in 1917-1918.
The sale underscores the enduring appeal of Klimt’s work and the continued strength of the high-end art market, even amid global economic uncertainty. The acquisition by an anonymous collector marks a significant moment for the art world, potentially signaling a shift in ownership within the ultra-wealthy and influencing future valuations of similar pieces. The painting was previously owned by an unnamed collector for decades and had not been publicly displayed since 1934. Sotheby’s described the portrait as a ”masterpiece of early 20th-century portraiture,” highlighting its vibrant colors and intricate details.
