Iranian men have acute kidney failure of ‘mouse urine’, how come?

Leptospirosis or mouse urine is an infectious disease caused by leptospira bacteria, which can be transmitted to humans through contact with water or soil contaminated with infected animal urine, especially mice.

Usually, this disease raises common symptoms such as fever, nausea, vomiting and muscle aches. But in very rare cases, leptospirosis can cause acute kidney failure.

This condition is experienced by 27 -year -old Iranian men who come to Velayat Hospital in Qazvin, Iran, with a decrease in urine volume. The art also changes color to brown and severe myalgia for 3 days.

In a case study published in the Journal of Medical Case Report, patients do not have a history of liver or kidney disease and do not take any drugs. He also did not smoke and did not use drugs.

After the history, the doctor noted he had a history of climbing mountains, and he reported climbing near the mountains with contact and drinking surface water about a week before the onset of symptoms.

Based on the diagnosis, the patient shows signs of rhabdomyolysis and impaired kidney function. Rhabdomyolysis is a condition when there is damage to muscle tissue which causes the release of toxic substances into the blood.

Patients are treated with early fluid resuscitation and dialysis. On the sixth day, even though it has been hydrated, the kidney function continues to deteriorate. Laboratory tests show that the patient is infected with leptospirosis.

“Our patient shows a unique clinical manifestation in the form of severe leptospirosis marked by massive rhabdomyolysis and acute kidney injury Acute Kidney injury (AKI), accompanied by respiratory disorders. So far, there has been no report on rhabdomyolysis related to leptospirosis in Iran,” the researcher wrote.
