Italian Man Poses as Deceased Mother for Three Years to Collect Pension
BORGO VIRGILIO, ITALY - A 57-year-old former nurse in Borgo Virgilio, near Mantua, Italy, allegedly defrauded teh pension system for three years by concealing his 82-year-old mother’s death and impersonating her to continue collecting her benefits.
Graziella Dall’Oglio reportedly died of natural causes, but her son allegedly kept her body at their home instead of reporting the death. He successfully claimed her pension for three years, supplementing it with income from three family properties, totaling approximately IDR 1 billion (roughly $65,000 USD) annually.
The scheme unraveled when dall’Oglio’s identity card expired, requiring a personal appearance for renewal. The son appeared at the civil registry office disguised as his mother, complete with a wig, makeup, nail polish, women’s clothing, and jewelry.
Alerted by visible dark hair on his neck, hands, and chin, registry staff contacted authorities. A subsequent police investigation discovered Dall’Oglio’s mummified remains hidden in a cupboard, wrapped in two sleeping bags. Investigators believe the son used his medical knowledge to slow the decomposition process by removing blood and body fluids.
The man now faces charges of pension fraud and concealing a body. This case represents an extreme example of pension fraud in Italy, authorities say.
