China’s Steadfast Support Provides Putin a Critical Lifeline, Regardless of Ukraine War Outcome
BEIJING – Despite international pressure and potential economic repercussions, China shows no sign of altering its relationship wiht Russia, offering Vladimir Putin a crucial source of support that mitigates the impact of Western sanctions and ensures continued access to vital resources. This enduring partnership suggests Putin is unlikely to distance himself from Beijing, even should a resolution to the conflict in Ukraine emerge.
The ongoing material cooperation between China and Russia has effectively replaced many of the goods and services Russia lost access to following its invasion of Ukraine. While Beijing isn’t directly involved in military action, its consistent support provides a critical economic buffer for the Kremlin.
Technically, severing ties with China would require onyl a directive from Putin, but there is no discernible advantage for him to do so. Sources suggest Putin may prioritize cultivating a relationship with a potential future U.S. administration under Donald Trump, without sacrificing the benefits of the Sino-Russian alliance.
the calculus for Chinese President Xi Jinping is more complex, as he is not an absolute ruler and must consider the potential domestic consequences of his foreign policy decisions. The threat of U.S. tariffs poses a significant economic risk to China, raising the question of whether supporting Putin is worth jeopardizing the nation’s economic stability, particularly given choice sources of energy exist.
However, two key factors appear to outweigh economic concerns for Xi. First, abandoning Russia to the judgment of a U.S. president would be perceived as an admission of inferiority – an unacceptable outcome for a leader who presents himself as a global power. Second, while alternative energy sources are currently available, a potential conflict over Taiwan – for which China is actively preparing – could disrupt global supply chains and render Russian energy resources indispensable.
Therefore, despite a lack of genuine affinity or respect for Putin, the alliance with Russia remains strategically valuable for China and its leadership. Beijing is unlikely to jeopardize this partnership, even for improved trade relations with Europe and the United States. The mutually beneficial nature of the relationship between Putin and Xi suggests it will persist, at least until a fundamental shift in the global geopolitical landscape occurs.
