Trump Announces End to Trade Negotiations with Canada Following Ontario Ad Campaign
Breaking News: Donald trump has announced the termination of all trade negotiations with Canada, responding to an advertising campaign run by the Canadian province of Ontario. The announcement, delivered in a statement attributed to “President DJT,” offered no further details beyond the declaration: “Based on their egregious behavior, ALL TRADE NEGOTIATIONS WITH CANADA ARE HEREBY TERMINATED. thank you for your attention to this matter!”
the Ontario provincial government is currently running a $75 million advertising campaign in the United States that utilizes clips of former President Ronald Reagan criticizing tariffs. the ads highlight Reagan’s warnings about the negative consequences of tariffs, including job losses and trade wars.
The campaign has drawn criticism from the Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation & Institute, which stated on X (formerly Twitter) that the ads employ “selective audio and video” of Reagan.
Ontario Premier Doug Ford acknowledged the potential for a negative reaction from Trump, telling reporters, “I heard that the president heard our ad. I’m sure he wasn’t too happy.” Ford further emphasized the power of using Reagan’s voice, stating, “Coming from a person like Ronald reagan, every Republican is going to identify that voice… he was just the best president the country’s ever seen from my personal perspective.”
This isn’t the first time Reagan’s stance on tariffs has been invoked to challenge Trump’s trade policies. In April, the Chinese Embassy in Washington, D.C., also shared a clip of Reagan’s 1987 radio address criticizing tariffs.
In that 1987 address, Reagan warned, “At first, when someone says, ‘Let’s impose tariffs on foreign imports,’ it looks like they’re doing the patriotic thing… but only for a short time. High tariffs inevitably lead to retaliation by foreign countries and the triggering of fierce trade wars.” He predicted tariffs would ultimately lead to “collapsing markets, crumbling industry and the loss of jobs for millions of Americans.”
Both Trump and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney are scheduled to attend the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum summit in South Korea from October 31st to November 1st. it remains to be seen how this latest development will impact those discussions.
