U-M Medical Employee Rescued From Stuck Elevator at C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital After 7-Hour Ordeal
ANN ARBOR, MI – An employee of Michigan Medicine was safely rescued from a stalled elevator at C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital on Tuesday, September 30, after being trapped for approximately seven hours. Ann Arbor firefighters utilized a rope system to bring the individual to safety by 11 a.m.
The rescue operation, wich began earlier that morning, was carefully planned to avoid potential damage to the hospital’s infrastructure and the elevator car itself, which could have resulted in costly repairs. According to Ann Arbor Fire department Battalion Chief Kevin kennedy, breaching the elevator shaft presented a notable risk. ”We try to do everything we can to avoid damaging a car,” Kennedy said.
The employee remained calm throughout the incident, which aided in the decision to employ the rope rescue technique. Firefighters were lowered into the elevator shaft, secured the employee in a harness, and then raised them to the 8th floor, the department stated in a Facebook post.
“There’s always a degree of risk when you put people on rope,” Kennedy said. “I’m so proud of our crew.”
C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital confirmed the employee was uninjured and stated they are investigating the cause of the elevator malfunction. The department’s Facebook post also commended the employee’s composure during the ordeal, noting it was instrumental in a successful outcome.
