Authorities Release Video of Suspect in Charlie Kirk Killing
OREM, Utah - Police have released surveillance video of a suspect wanted in connection with the fatal shooting of Charlie Kirk, a prominent young Republican activist, earlier this week. The utah County Sheriff’s Office is seeking the public’s help in identifying the individual seen in the footage, which depicts a person near the scene of the shooting around the time of the incident.
Kirk,22,was shot and killed Monday evening near the utah Valley University campus in Orem,sparking an outpouring of grief and political reaction. He was known for his influential role in mobilizing young conservatives and was credited by figures within the Trump management with contributing to the GOP’s 2024 electoral victory.
Following the shooting, hundreds gathered for vigils and memorial events, including a prayer gathering led by Orem Mayor david Young, who urged attendees to “Come together in light,” and to reject violence. Mourners placed flowers, candles, and flags at a memorial featuring a large photo of Kirk.
“It’s crucial that we don’t turn on each other in this moment,” said Jason Preston, a conservative podcast host, to applause at one gathering. “This is not a battle of right versus left, this is a battle of good versus evil.”
Students at Utah Valley university also organized gatherings, displaying banners honoring Kirk’s Republican ideology and carrying signs reading “We are not afraid” and “Charlie Kirk, American hero.” Some students believe Kirk’s death may galvanize the conservative movement.
“I think this kind of woke a sleeping giant,” said UVU student Jillian Green, 20. ”People are outraged and very upset that he [was killed] when he was advocating for so many of us.”
Koby Herrera, 22, a fellow student, added, “He had a voice, and I feel like his voice is bigger now that he’s in the grave.”
