Putin Offers Donetsk for Ukraine Peace Deal – Trump Seeks Quick Resolution

, Vladimir Putin, has proposed a framework for ending the ⁤war in Ukraine, ⁤according too reports from August 16, 2025.⁣ The proposal, presented to US President Donald Trump during a summit in Alaska, centers on Ukraine’s complete withdrawal from the Donetsk region⁤ in​ exchange for a freeze on the current front ‍lines.

putin reportedly offered to freeze the front lines in the ‍southern regions of Kherson and Zaporizhzhia alongside the Donetsk⁤ concession. He‌ also proposed a written guarantee against future attacks on Ukraine or other European nations. Moscow ‍also indicated a willingness‍ to allow Ukraine to recieve security guarantees, but not through NATO ‍membership. Additionally, the Kremlin seeks to reinstate Russian as an official ‌language in Ukraine and ensure the protection of⁤ Russian Orthodox churches within the‌ country.

Trump‍ reportedly shared Putin’s proposal​ with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and European leaders,⁢ urging them to consider a ceasefire with⁤ Moscow. Though, both​ Zelenskyy and European leaders have rejected the idea of ceding territory to Russia, citing​ constitutional concerns.according to ⁢Ukrainian government officials, surrendering territory would violate the‍ Ukrainian‌ constitution.⁣ Military experts ‌note that losing control of the Donetsk region would be a significant economic and military blow to Ukraine, potentially opening the way for further ⁣Russian‌ advances. Currently, Russian forces control approximately 75%⁤ of the Donetsk region and nearly 100% of the Luhansk region.

A European diplomat, speaking to the Financial ​Times, expressed‍ skepticism about Putin’s commitment‍ to any agreement, stating, “Putin plays⁤ in the long run and will not keep⁣ his promises.” The diplomat contrasted Trump’s ⁢desire for a speedy deal with Putin’s more patient approach. Trump is scheduled to discuss the matter further with ⁢Zelenskyy in Washington on Monday.
