The Indonesian Logistics Driver Association (APTR) has mandated that all truck drivers display the Indonesian national flag,Merah Putih (red and white),on their vehicles and residences, effective instantly. The directive comes amid increased scrutiny of flags displayed on vehicles, particularly those associated with the popular anime series One Piece.

“We have reached an agreement and disseminated instructions to all members: prioritize the display of the Merah Putih flag in commemoration of the Republic of Indonesia’s anniversary,” stated Suroso, General Chairman of APTR, following a meeting with government officials and members of the Indonesian Parliament (DPR) at the DPR Complex in Senayan, Jakarta, on Monday, August 4, 2025.

“Individuals who disregard organizational rules will be solely responsible for any consequences, including potential government intervention. we are in alignment with management across all provinces, districts, and cities, and we must uphold the laws of our country,” Suroso added. He reiterated the importance of displaying the flag on both vehicles and homes as a tribute to the nation’s founding fathers.

the APTR represents an estimated 3.5 million truck drivers across Indonesia, playing a critical role in the nation’s supply chain. The association’s membership includes independent drivers and those employed by logistics companies.

Deputy Speaker of the DPR, Sufmi Dasco Ahmad, acknowledged the popularity of flags like the One Piece flag but cautioned against their use in ways that could foster national division. He stated that while expressing personal preferences through flags is acceptable,it should not undermine national unity.

“we recognize that many people enjoy displaying various flags, including the One Piece flag. However, our concern is that some parties may exploit thes flags to create discord within our nation. We believe that creative expression through flag displays is generally acceptable, but it must not be divisive,” Dasco explained.

The discussion follows a recent surge in the display of customized flags on vehicles, particularly among younger drivers, coinciding with the lead-up to Indonesia’s 80th Independence Day on august 17th. The government has not issued a formal ban on non-national flags, but the APTR’s directive signals a growing concern about potential misuse.
