Console Wars Update: PlayStation Dominates as Xbox Sales Figures Remain Disputed – Recent data indicates a widening gap in sales between Sony’s PlayStation 5 and Microsoft‘s Xbox Series X/S consoles, fueling ongoing debate about teh current generation’s market performance. The discrepancy stems from varying reports from manufacturers and data analysis firms.
Take-Two Interactive reported in February 2025 that over 94 million consoles of the current generation had been sold as of November 2024. Sony confirmed PlayStation 5 sales reached 65.6 million units through September 2024, suggesting potential sales exceeding 68 million by November. This leaves an estimated 26-27 million units attributed to the Xbox Series X/S.
Industry analyst Keplerl2 estimates Xbox sales may be lower than the 37 million projection made by Welfare, a financial analysis firm specializing in the gaming industry based in London, UK. VGChartz, utilizing retail sales data, currently tracks over 32 million Xbox series X/S units sold globally.
Keplerl2,known for leaks regarding upcoming console hardware – including details on the PS6’s potential AMD UDNA GPU architecture – has faced scrutiny regarding the accuracy of its sales analysis. NotebookCheck.net, where Keplerl2 frequently shares information, reported in October 2024 that the PS6 and next-gen Xbox are expected to feature significantly improved ray tracing capabilities. Despite these concerns, analysts generally agree that PlayStation’s lead over Xbox is expected to increase in the coming months.
The ongoing supply chain issues, particularly impacting component availability for the xbox Series X, have been cited by Microsoft as a contributing factor to lower sales numbers. Sony, benefiting from a stronger manufacturing partnership with Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) in Hsinchu, Taiwan, has maintained a more consistent supply of PS5 consoles.
