United Airlines CEO Scott Kirby Outlines Growth, JFK Expansion, and AI Plans After 10 Years
United Airlines Holdings Inc. CEO Scott Kirby marked his tenth year at the carrier by outlining aggressive plans to expand operations at New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport through a JetBlue Airways partnership and integrate artificial intelligence into daily workflows, according to CNBC.
Strategic JFK Expansion and JetBlue Partnership
United Airlines intends to scale up its footprint at John F. Kennedy International Airport as early as next year by utilizing slot acquisitions and a partnership structure with JetBlue Airways. Currently operating its primary New York metropolitan area hub out of Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey, United aims to capture high-yield traffic currently dominated by competitors. “We got a bunch of irons in the fire to try to find ways to do it,” Kirby stated during a recent interview with CNBC, noting that the carrier could acquire slots from operators not running profitable routes out of JFK.
This push into constrained East Coast infrastructure arrives as the airline evaluates broader network adjustments. Kirby remains focused on expanding the carrier’s international footprint, which serves as a core engine for customer loyalty and premium co-branded credit card sign-ups. United holds the leading position among U.S. carriers for international flights, with past route launches spanning destinations like Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, and Bilbao, Spain, alongside planned announcements for new global routes.
Operational Reliability and Artificial Intelligence Integration
In the first half of the year, United ranked behind Delta Air Lines and Alaska Airlines for on-time arrivals, according to Transportation Department figures. To close this performance gap, Kirby outlined plans to deploy artificial intelligence tools designed to streamline workflows for employees and simplify travel management for customers.
Under the planned AI integration, the airline aims to communicate flight delays and schedule changes to passengers in clear, straightforward English rather than opaque industry jargon. “I firmly believe in no excuses, and so we don’t make excuses,” Kirby told CNBC. The technology push is paired with a strict commitment to workforce stability, with Kirby stating that his goal is to never have another furlough at the airline.
Merger Stance and Industry Consolidation Realities
Kirby addressed ongoing industry consolidation speculation by confirming that United is not currently pursuing large-scale mergers with domestic rivals. Kirby previously approached Delta Air Lines regarding a potential combination, but the overture was rejected. Delta President Peter Carter noted at an industry conference in June that he does not see mergers in Delta’s future, while American Airlines publicly rebuffed a merger offer from United during the spring.

We don’t spend a lot of time pursuing impossibilities,” American Airlines CEO Robert Isom told CNBC in late June. Kirby reiterated to CNBC that he holds a similar stance and maintains no current interest in acquiring smaller domestic carriers like JetBlue outright.
A Decade of Leadership at United Airlines
Kirby marked his decade-long tenure since joining United as president on August 29, 2016, following his departure from American Airlines where he previously served as president. Reflecting on the rapid transition, Kirby told CNBC, “I joke that most people take a few weeks, a couple months between jobs. I took 60 seconds.” Shortly after stepping into the role in 2016, Kirby evaluated money-losing routes and aborted planned base closures at Los Angeles International Airport and Washington Dulles International Airport. He was promoted to CEO in May 2020 during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic.

As the airline looks toward future fiscal quarters, maintaining capital discipline and operational efficiency will remain paramount.
