Diplomats and observers are expressing reservations about the White House’s nomination of right-wing commentator Nick Adams as the next ambassador to Malaysia, fueling worries that former U.S. President Donald Trump may value political allegiance more than actual diplomatic skill.

Adams, originally from Australia, is a conservative activist known for his ardent support of Trump. He was among several ambassadorial candidates submitted this week for Senate confirmation, which included nominees for Singapore, Sri Lanka, Thailand, and Kazakhstan.
The nomination is generating buzz due to Adams’s history of provocative social media activity and staunch advocacy for Donald Trump. The selection of Adams has been met with skepticism, especially given the importance of diplomacy in maintaining stable international relations.
The U.S. currently has ambassadors to just 61% of countries, according to the Partnership for Public Service (Partnership for Public Service).
Controversial Statements
Adams has become known for incendiary remarks on social media and publicity stunts, including disparaging pop star Taylor Swift. He once protested an M&M’s “all-female” candy package in Times Square.
In one widely circulated online post, Adams stated: “I go to Hooters. I eat rare steaks. I lift extremely heavy weights. I read the Bible every night. I am pursued by copious amounts of women,”
adding that his critics “hate me because I have the body of a Greek God.”
Close Ties to Trump
As Trump intensified his campaign leading up to the November 2024 presidential election, Adams actively championed him, appearing at rallies and in media appearances to advocate for the Republican candidate’s positions.
In a video shared on social media, Adams expressed his gratitude to Trump for the nomination, stating, “It is nothing short of a lifetime’s honour to take the president’s goodwill and spread it to the great people of Malaysia.”
