President Donald Trump threatened a 200% tariff on French wine and champagne Tuesday, aiming to pressure France into joining his “Board of peace” organization.
Trump spoke to reporters at Palm Beach International Airport before boarding Air Force one. he’s heading back to Washington, D.C.
“I’ll put a 200% tariff on their wines and champagnes, and he’ll join,” Trump said, referring to President Emmanuel Macron. He believes this will incentivize France to participate.
The Board of Peace is Trump’s initiative for an intergovernmental organization. Details about its structure and goals remain limited. It’s unclear how France would contribute,or what benefits it would receive.
This isn’t the first time Trump has used tariffs as a negotiating tactic. He previously imposed tariffs on goods from China and other countries. These actions often sparked trade disputes and raised prices for consumers.
The French government hasn’t yet responded to Trump’s threat. It’s likely to face criticism from the European Union, which generally opposes unilateral tariffs.
