Melania Trump brokers Oleshky ceasefire for humanitarian aid
A localized ceasefire in Ukraine’s southern Kherson region went into effect at 01:00 GMT on Tuesday, halting strikes in the Russian-occupied town of Oleshky to clear the way for a humanitarian mission brokered by U.S. First Lady Melania Trump.
White House Deal Aims to Supply Trapped Residents
The pause in fighting aims to address an acute shortage of food, medicine, and basic supplies in the front-line town, where an estimated 2,000 residents remain trapped. According to the United Nations, civilians have been unable to flee due to explosive mines and drone activity. The White House announced the agreement on October 23, noting that Pope Leo also contributed to diplomatic efforts to revive peace talks between Moscow and Kyiv. The Russian Defence Ministry confirmed the start of the “regime of silence” in the Kherson sector to prepare for the delivery of doctors, water, and provisions.
Assessments on the Ground
Civilian representatives from both sides will visit Oleshky to assess residents’ needs before organizing departures. First Lady Melania Trump stated that returning evacuees would receive coordinated transport, adding that some individuals might choose to relocate to Russia while others head to Ukraine.

Officials Dispute Role of Intervention and Population Counts
While emphasized the first lady’s intervention as vital for preventing a disaster in a town where residents have reportedly resorted to eating grass or homegrown produce, noted that protracted cease-fire efforts had been underway for months. Ukrainian officials had previously accused Moscow of rejecting prior truces, and figures such as Ukrainian ombudsman Dmytro Lubinets had reported an impending agreement days earlier without mentioning the White House.
Disputes also persist regarding the scale of the remaining population. Russian human rights commissioner Yana Lantratova claimed that most residents wishing to leave had already departed of their own volition. Meanwhile, local estimates place the current population at roughly 2,000, down from a pre-war total of 24,000.
Unanswered Questions Over Truce Duration
Neither Russia, Ukraine, nor the United States has specified how long the truce will last or which entity will monitor the operation. Authorities have not yet outlined definitive evacuation schedules beyond the weekend, leaving the duration of the safe corridors and the ultimate scope of the relief effort unconfirmed.
