Iran Slams Trump Economic Warfare Threats As Terrorism

August 20, 2026 Emma Walker – News Editor News

US President Donald Trump announced what he termed the most crushing economic operation ever taken against any country, aiming to isolate Iran and penalize any country doing business with Tehran. According to Daily Mail, the economic warfare initiative targets oil smuggling, swap lines, cash transfers, exchange houses, ship registries, and front companies as the war nears its sixth month.

Unprecedented Economic Warfare and Global Penalties

The financial campaign follows months of targeted US Treasury efforts, including Operation Economic Fury, aiming to cut off Iran’s funding. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent outlined the strategy on Newsmax, describing a two-pronged approach combining a US naval blockade with economic isolation. In a post on Truth Social, President Trump warned that any country allowing financial institutions, businesses, airports, or government entities to provide any type of lifeline to Iran will face tremendous economic consequences.

The targeted activities span several operational sectors. Trump listed oil smuggling, swap lines, cash transfers, exchange houses, ship registries, and front companies as activities that need to stop immediately. While specific punishment countries would face remains unspecified, the policy places pressure on international trade networks that maintain ties with Iran.

Iranian Response and Macroeconomic Pressures

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi dismissed the measures, calling them “economic terrorism” and a “diversion.” Writing on X, Araghchi argued that the so-called “Economic D-Day” is a diversion from America’s own crisis, pointing specifically to unprecedented debt and surging interest costs. According to US media reports, the conflict has severely drawn down US munition stockpiles, though the Pentagon has denied these reports.

The economic squeeze unfolds against a backdrop of regional disruption. The Strait of Hormuz remains significantly choked-off following missile and drone strikes that broke out on February 28. Despite the diplomatic stalemate, Axios reported that US forces have been facilitating the transit of 15 to 20 ships in and out of the Hormuz each night in recent weeks, carrying roughly half the pre-war volume of daily oil shipments. President Trump also asserted via social media that “right now, a lot of boats are coming through,” even as he insisted on Tuesday that talks were off.

Regional Fallout and Corporate Risk Mitigation

Neighboring Gulf states are recalibrating their commercial postures. The United Arab Emirates announced the suspension of all economic dealings with Iran after saying it had been targeted by two ballistic missiles, illustrating the security risks facing regional commercial hubs.
