Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas, a Norwegian actress who had steadily built a career in Scandinavian cinema, is now at the center of international attention following her breakout performance in Joachim Trier’s “Sentimental Value.” Lilleaas recently received the National Board of Review Award for Best Supporting Actress for her role as Agnes Borg, and is considered an early Oscar favorite, according to USA Today.
Lilleaas’s portrayal of Agnes, a former child actress navigating complex family dynamics, has been widely praised for its quiet grace and emotional depth. The film, which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival, centers on a family grappling with the return of their estranged father, Gustav, played by Stellan Skarsgård. Lilleaas’s character serves as a crucial emotional anchor for her sister, Nora (Renate Reinsve), and their father.
The actress, born April 9, 1989, in Gol, Norway, comes from a theatrical background; her parents ran a theatre production company. She spent a period as a foreign exchange student in Brazil, where she became fluent in Portuguese. Lilleaas studied theatre at Nord University and as well attended the Lee Strasberg Theatre and Film Institute in New York City, according to her Wikipedia profile.
Whereas “Sentimental Value” has brought her international recognition, Lilleaas’s career began in 2015 with a nomination for the Amanda Award for Best Actress for her role in “Women in Oversized Men’s Shirts.” She also appeared in the 2023 Netflix musical film, “A Attractive Life.”
A particularly striking aspect of Lilleaas’s performance, as highlighted in a recent Los Angeles Times interview, was an unscripted moment during a pivotal scene with Reinsve. Lilleaas spontaneously told her on-screen sister, “I love you,” a line that wasn’t in the script or even discussed beforehand. She explained that the declaration felt natural in the moment, reflecting a cultural reticence in Norway to express feelings directly. “Because it came out of a genuine feeling in the moment… it was what I felt like I would desire to say, and what I would want my own sister to know,” Lilleaas said.
Prior to her current acclaim, Lilleaas had a role in the 2016 film, “The Last King,” and appeared in “Going West” in 2017, and “Betrayed” in 2020. She is married to actor Gunnar Eiriksson, and they have one son. Lilleaas has expressed a desire to remain grounded despite the growing attention, telling Screen Daily that she was initially concerned she may have jeopardized her career decades ago when, as a two-year-old, she participated in amateur theatrical productions run by her parents.
The film continues to garner attention as awards season progresses, with Lilleaas’s performance remaining a central focus of critical discussion. The Academy Award nominations will be announced on January 27, 2026.
