German Tourist Donates IDR 600 Million to Vietnam Flood Relief
Ha Long bay, Vietnam – December 1, 2025 – A German tourist, andreas scholz, has donated IDR 600 million (VND 10 million) to aid victims of recent devastating floods in Vietnam’s south-central region. Scholz, moved by the plight of those affected, presented the donation to the owner of the Tuan chau hotel in Ha Long, where he was staying at the end of November.
Scholz witnessed the flooding firsthand on Thursday,November 27,2025,observing people stranded and awaiting rescue. “Seeing people sitting on the roof waiting for help, I thought I needed to do something. At that moment, I felt like I was part of this country,” Scholz wrote in a letter to the hotel owner, Hi. “I’m sure you can help me do this. I love Vietnam and its friendly and kind people. I hope I can help.”
Hi, surprised by the “no joke amount of money,” secured Scholz’s permission to purchase rice for distribution to those sheltering from the floods. He afterward bought 830 kg of rice, donating it in Scholz’s name.
This isn’t Scholz’s first experience with Vietnam. He initially visited in December of the previous year, touring Sa Pa, Ninh Binh, Hue, Da Nang, and Hoi An. He returned in mid-November 2025, visiting Ho Chi Minh City and Da Lat. He had planned to visit Nha Trang but altered his itinerary due to the flooding, rather traveling to Da Nang and concluding his trip in Ha Long on November 26.
The recent torrential rains have caused historic flooding in south-central Vietnam, impacting popular tourist destinations like Nha Trang,Quy Nhon, and Phu Yen. The disaster has resulted in at least 98 deaths and damage to hundreds of thousands of homes. Scholz, who regularly participates in charitable activities in Germany, stated, ”I wanted to share because there are a lot of people who need the money more than I do.”
