Gachagua accuses Ruto of using fuel price hikes to fund campaigns
Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua alleged that President William Ruto ordered a price increase of KSh 12 per litre for petrol and KSh 9 per litre for diesel to generate funds for political bribery ahead of the August 2027 General Election, allafrica.com reported.
Gachagua Targets Wandayi Over Fuel Justification
Gachagua claimed the proposed increases would be processed through Gulf Energy and alleged that Energy and Petroleum Cabinet Secretary Opiyo Wandayi had been instructed to defend the adjustment by citing global oil prices, according to allafrica.com. Tuko.co.ke reported that Gachagua labelled the expected justification as fabricated, pointing his criticism directly at the energy minister.
That so-called expert, Mr. Opiyo Wandayi, has been instructed to call a press conference and justify the increase, citing global prices. Pure lies and conmanship!
If the figures cited by Gachagua materialize, petrol prices will retail at KSh 226.03 and diesel at KSh 226.86, tuko.co.ke reported.
Public Rejection and Cash Handouts in the Rift Valley
Beyond fuel pricing, Gachagua accused the administration of facing widespread public rejection over abductions, extrajudicial killings, corruption, poor economic management, and the rising cost of living, as reported by allafrica.com. Tuko.co.ke added that Gachagua characterized the President as desperate and angry, claiming that financial demands and cash distribution had followed Ruto even into his political stronghold in the Rift Valley.
The latest accusations deepen the ongoing political rift between the President and his former deputy following Gachagua’s impeachment in October 2024. Gachagua has continued to position his Democracy for the Citizens Party against the administration as the country looks toward the August 10, 2027, ballot.
