Heatwave Grips China: Workers Persevere on Crucial Infrastructure

From Coal Lines to Airport Aprons, Essential Services Battle Extreme Temperatures

Across China, relentless high temperatures are pushing essential workers to their limits. While many seek refuge indoors, dedicated personnel are braving scorching sun and sweltering heat to keep vital industries and transport networks functioning.

Shanxi: Powering the Nation Under the Sun

In Shanxi province, the demand for electricity has surged due to the intense heat, leading to a significant increase in coal train traffic. At the Changzinan Railway Inspection Workshop, over 7,000 trains laden with coal depart daily, bound for various regions. The Waji Railway, known for its challenging terrain and steep gradients, requires constant maintenance. During the summer rush, the workshop replaces more than 300 brake shoes daily, a task intensified by a 10% rise in usual traffic volume.

Each 60-car electric coal train undergoes a crucial 35-minute technical inspection to ensure timely departures. Essential tasks like brake shoe replacement and component checks are still performed manually. However, automated systems, nicknamed “little crabs” by inspectors for their efficiency and precision, are now handling key braking performance tests.

Henan: Engineering Projects and Production Forge Ahead

In Henan, construction projects and industrial production are continuing amidst the oppressive heat. Workers on the Tongji Avenue Bridge, part of a waterway expansion project, are installing steel bars. These frontline laborers are utilizing specialized air-conditioned protective suits, complete with circulating fan and ice pack systems for cooling.

At an aluminum production facility, employees are working diligently to produce 6,000 tons of aluminum alloy plates for export. The company is providing heat subsidies and essential cooling supplies, including saline drinks, watermelon, and traditional Chinese remedies like Huoxiang Zhengqi water, to its staff. The Henan Provincial Meteorological Observatory forecasts continued high temperatures, advising the public to take precautions and minimize outdoor activity during peak heat hours.

Chengdu: Airport Operations Maintain Pace Despite Extreme Heat

Chengdu Shuangliu International Airport is experiencing extreme heat, with surface temperatures on the apron nearing 50°C. Despite a red high-temperature warning, ground crews are diligently working to ensure safe and orderly passenger and freight transportation during the busy summer season. Through cooperative shift work, these essential personnel are staying on post.

Even as the perceived temperature on the tarmac soared above 40°C, ground staff were observed carrying supplies and preparing cargo for flights. Many wear protective gear like hats and sleeves to mitigate the harsh conditions. The airport’s high pole lights, critical for nighttime operations, require regular maintenance. Ground crews must lower and service these lights, even in the extreme heat, inspecting lifting systems and tightening bolts, a process that takes about an hour per light.

To support these hardworking individuals, the airport has established seven shared lounges equipped with cooling systems and essential supplies, including first aid and heat-relief medications. These comfortable havens offer a welcome respite, with internal temperatures maintained at a pleasant 25°C.
