xi, Putin, and Kim Observe Extensive Military Display in Beijing
Beijing hosted a large-scale military parade on September 3rd, marking the end of World War II, and notably featured Chinese President Xi Jinping alongside Russian President Vladimir Putin and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un. This was the first time the three leaders have been seen together publicly.
The event began with extended handshakes between xi and Kim, followed by Xi greeting Putin. The three leaders then walked side-by-side along a red carpet to a viewing rostrum in Tiananmen Square, joining approximately 50,000 guests observing the march-past of 10,000 troops. Over 100 aircraft also participated in the flyover.
The parade showcased ChinaS growing military capabilities, including new hypersonic and Inter Continental Ballistic Missiles. Thes included a new DF-5C version of the Dongfeng-5,reportedly capable of reaching the United States,as well as the DF-26D and DF-61 missiles. New AI-enabled autonomous weapons were also displayed. The J-20S twin-seater stealth fighter made its first public appearance, though it was presented in a static display and did not fly.
The parade also highlighted newly established branches of the People’s Liberation Army: the Aerospace Force, Cyberspace Force, and Data Support Force.
Despite the display of military strength, Xi emphasized a commitment to peace. Helicopters flew banners reading “Justice will prevail. Peace prevails. The people prevail,” and Xi stated in a speech that the world faces a choice between “peace or war, dialogue or confrontation, win-win or zero-sum.” He added that china’s people “firmly stand on the right side of history.” He also asserted that China “is never intimidated by any bullies” and that the country was “unstoppable.”
“Strength may prevail for a time, but over the long arc of history, it is indeed reason that wins. Justice, light, and progress will always triumph over evil, darkness, and reaction,” Xi declared.
The event had limited Western representation, with only two Western leaders in attendance. No representatives from China’s wartime allies – including the United States, Britain, Australia, New Zealand, and the Philippines – were invited.
The display of unity and military power drew a strong reaction from U.S. President donald Trump, who accused the three leaders of plotting against the United States. Trump also expressed concern that the event overlooked america’s contribution to defeating the Japanese army in China, writing on social media, “Many Americans died in China’s quest for Victory and Glory. I hope that they are rightfully Honored and Remembered for their bravery and Sacrifice!” He concluded with a direct message to the leaders: “Please give my warmest regards to Vladimir Putin and Kim Jong Un, as you conspire against the United states of America.”
Xi’s speech did acknowledge the assistance received from allies during the war, stating that China would “never forget the help” from “foreign governments and international friends” in defeating Japan, which formally surrendered on September 3, 1945.
