Wife Accused of Exploiting Paralyzed Husband After Draining His Life savings
A heartbreaking case in Shanghai has revealed allegations of financial exploitation against a man left paralyzed after a stroke shortly after his wedding. Wang, a Shanghai resident, married Ren Fang, 16 years his junior, in 2016. Tragically, he suffered a stroke on his wedding day, marking the beginning of a steep decline in his health. Over the following years, he endured multiple strokes, ultimately leading to paralysis and the loss of speech in 2019.
Wang,a widower who raised his daughter from a previous marriage alone for over 20 years, was reportedly seen as a desirable partner due to his pension, property, and relocation benefits. His mother had expressed concerns about the age gap and Ren’s potential motives.Following the eviction of Wang’s home in 2020, his wife and daughter received compensation totaling over 2 million yuan (approximately $280,000 USD). Shortly after, Ren legally sought to be declared Wang’s sole guardian, a request that was granted. She then filed a lawsuit against Wang’s daughter, attempting to claim a portion of the compensation. The court awarded Wang 1.1 million yuan, with the remainder going to his daughter.
Though, Wang’s daughter soon discovered that a meaningful portion of her father’s funds had been transferred to an account controlled by Ren. Over two years, she alleges Ren withdrew large sums, sometimes up to 50,000 yuan ($7,000 USD) per day, leaving the account with a mere 42 yuan (approximately $6 USD) by August 2024.
Ren defended her actions, claiming the money was used for nursing home costs, health supplements, and was partially saved in a bank offering higher interest rates. However, Wang’s daughter countered that his 6,000 yuan monthly pension was sufficient to cover his living expenses.
The court ultimately revoked Ren’s sole guardianship, appointing both Ren and Wang’s daughter as joint guardians. This requires both parties to sign off on all financial decisions. Furthermore, Ren’s attempts to claim ownership of the new apartment received in compensation were also rejected.
The judge emphasized that guardianship should prioritize genuine care for the vulnerable individual, not simply control over their assets. This case highlights the devastating consequences of potential financial abuse and the importance of protecting vulnerable individuals.
