British-Iranian Man Arrested Over RAF Fairford Security Incident
A 27-year-old dual UK-Iranian national was arrested in central London on suspicion of preparing terrorist acts in connection with an alleged security incident at Royal Air Force (RAF) Fairford in Gloucestershire, according to Counter Terrorism policing cited by Al Jazeera. The arrest marks the sixth detention in an investigation examining potential foreign state involvement near the military installation.
Arrest of the Dual National in Central London
Metropolitan Police counter-terrorism officers detained the 27-year-old suspect in central London on Thursday. Police also questioned a 26-year-old UK national under caution as part of the ongoing inquiry. Vicki Evans, the senior national coordinator for Counter Terrorism Policing for the Metropolitan Police, stated that the Gloucestershire investigation is hugely complex with specialist teams interrogating multiple lines of enquiry, including possible foreign state involvement.
The latest police actions follow an initial sweep on Sunday, when five men in their 20s from London were arrested near RAF Fairford on suspicion of explosives offences and terrorism. Al Jazeera reported that those five individuals have since been released on bail.
Security Context at RAF Fairford
RAF Fairford, situated 160 kilometres (100 miles) west of London, has served as a deployment hub for US bombers during decades of Middle East conflicts. Since February, the base has facilitated operations related to the US and Israel’s war on Iran. The US military has used the facility since March to launch attacks on Iran, while the UK government has authorised US bombers stationed there to strike Iranian missile sites targeting ships in the Strait of Hormuz.
In July, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) issued a warning stating that bases used to launch attacks on Iran could be treated as legitimate targets.
Iran Rejects Claims of Role in Airbase Incident
British Prime Minister Andy Burnham stated earlier that there were strong indications Iran played a role in the Sunday security incident near the Gloucestershire airbase. Iranian officials strongly rejected those assertions. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi responded by stating that British authorities were barking up the wrong tree. Meanwhile, the Iranian embassy in London characterized attempts to link Iran to the arrested individuals as fabricated speculations designed to fuel Iranophobia propaganda.
Police reported on Tuesday that no explosives were found in the vehicles parked near the base on Sunday, though officers retrieved a quantity of petrol.

Police Have Not Released Specific Evidence Against Iran
Reporting from London for Al Jazeera, Rory Challands noted that apart from the nationality of the newly arrested suspect, nothing in the case has been made public that specifically links Iran to the incident. Significant uncertainty remains surrounding the events of Sunday, as the exact nature of the threat has not been officially explained by British police, and no formal charges have been filed against any of the detained individuals.
Investigators have not yet clarified whether additional arrests will follow or when further updates regarding the scope of the inquiry will be released.
