Police launched a major operation near the village of Whelford in Gloucestershire after receiving information from local residents just after midnight on Sunday. Aerial footage from the scene showed a bomb disposal robot operating near three white vans in wooded areas close to the base. The rear doors of two vans stood open with large black items scattered nearby. The Army’s specialist explosive ordnance disposal team deployed to examine the vehicles and secure the area.

Emergency services, including a Hazardous Area Response Team, rushed to the scene as dozens of nearby homes were evacuated as a precaution. Displaced residents were transported to a local leisure centre while officers maintained a strict cordon around the site. Authorities emphasized that the surrounding community remains safe and that the incident is contained.

Government officials moved quickly to reassure the public as security forces addressed the situation. Defense Secretary Wes Streeting posted on X to thank emergency response teams and specialist units, stating that the public can be reassured the incident is being handled and demonstrating why response teams and Armed Forces remain on standby 24/7. A government spokesperson confirmed that Prime Minister Andy Burnham is receiving regular updates on the situation.

South Cotswolds Liberal Democrat MP Roz Savage described the unfolding events as worrying but noted that police informed her the situation is contained. Local residents reported seeing heightened security measures around the airbase in recent weeks, including heavy vehicles blocking access gates.

The security intervention directly impacts the region surrounding RAF Fairford, a critical forward operating location for United States Air Force Global Strike Command. In March, the UK government authorized the US Air Force to use Fairford for defensive actions against Iranian missile sites targeting shipping in the Strait of Hormuz. Following those operations, Iran’s Revolutionary Guards issued warnings regarding the use of UK bases, prompting heightened readiness across British military installations.

In response to the developing security environment, US installations in the UK adjusted their threat postures. ITV News understands that RAF Lakenheath in Suffolk operates under Force Protection Condition (FPCon) Charlie, the second-highest US Department of Defense threat level, which applies when intelligence indicates terrorist action against personnel or facilities is likely. Reports also indicated that threat levels at RAF Fairford reached Delta, the highest status implemented when an attack has occurred or is imminent.

A spokesperson for the 501st Combat Support Wing at RAF Fairford emphasized that personnel remain vigilant. For operational security reasons, military officials declined to discuss specific force protection measures but confirmed they are taking appropriate actions to ensure the safety and security of US service members, civilian employees, contractors, and their families.
