september 8, 2025 – A spectacular total lunar eclipse, often referred to as a “blood moon” due to its striking reddish hue, captivated skywatchers across Asia, parts of Europe, and Africa on Sunday. Teh celestial event occurred as the sun, Earth, and moon aligned, casting Earth’s shadow upon the lunar surface.

The eclipse was most prominently visible across Asia, with observers in India and China enjoying prime viewing opportunities. Eastern Africa and western Australia also witnessed the full spectacle. The totality phase – when the moon was wholly within Earth’s umbra – lasted from 17:30 GMT to 18:52 GMT.

While the Americas missed this particular event, those in Europe were treated to a partial eclipse as the moon rose in the early evening.

The distinctive red color of the moon during a lunar eclipse isn’t magic, but science. “The moon appears red during lunar eclipses because the only sunlight reaching it is reflected and scattered through the Earth’s atmosphere,” explains Ryan Milligan, an astrophysicist at Queen’s University Belfast, Northern Ireland. he further elaborated to AFP, “Blue wavelengths of light are shorter than red ones, so they are more easily dispersed as they travel through Earth’s atmosphere. That’s what gives the moon its red, bloody colour.”

Unlike solar eclipses, viewing a lunar eclipse requires no special equipment. Clear skies and a good vantage point were all that was needed to witness this breathtaking astronomical display.

This latest total lunar eclipse follows similar events in March of this year and in 2022, continuing a captivating cycle of celestial alignment for stargazers around the globe.
