Bitcoin trades above $77,000 as analysts weigh Binance hack fallout
Bitcoin traded just above $77,000 on Saturday morning as investors weighed the fallout from a record $6.3 billion security breach at Binance, while analysts debated whether the sharp price correction offers a buying opportunity. The largest cryptocurrency changed hands at $77,175.40, down 1.71% from previous sessions, following the exploit late Thursday that caused prices to crash in digital asset markets and triggered steep declines across crypto-linked equities.
Binance Asset Recovery Efforts Contrast With Automated Laundering Patterns
Attention has shifted from the initial theft to the attackers’ methods for moving stolen funds and the broader industry’s capacity to contain the damage. Blockchain analysis firm Chainalysis identified automated money laundering patterns involving thousands of transactions, suggesting the hackers deployed sophisticated systems to obscure the stolen assets. Researchers linked this activity to Tradertraitor, a North Korea-linked hacking group, after finding operational connections between the assets stolen from Binance and funds drained during a separate breach at Bitget in September.
During the maneuvers, the attackers converted $325 million in stablecoins into approximately $285 million in ether, attempting to move the capital outside the reach of issuer-controlled freezes. Binance countered the breach by releasing plans to restore withdrawals gradually following rigorous security verifications. The exchange confirmed it has set aside more than $6.34 billion in internal reserves to cover potential client losses. Binance scheduled the publication of proof-of-reserves data to give investors an additional metric regarding its current liquidity position.
Wall Street Analysts Assess Support Levels and Market Resilience
Market observers at Cantor Fitzgerald, TD Cowen, and Compass Point argued that the security breach does not inherently threaten the underlying technology of Bitcoin or the broader market’s recovery path. Ramsey El-Assal, an analyst at Cantor, viewed the weakness in crypto-linked equities as a potential entry point for investors. Meanwhile, Compass Point designated the $75,000 to $77,000 price window as a critical support zone for Bitcoin, cautioning that a sustained breakdown beneath those thresholds could jeopardize the asset’s recent upward trajectory.
Broader cryptocurrency prices absorbed losses alongside Bitcoin’s dip. Ether ticked up 0.02% to $2,240.54, while XRP declined 0.96% to $1.2450. Solana dropped 1.98% to $96.08, and BNB retreated 1.91% to $702.57. Cardano decreased 0.26% to $0.1929, and Dogecoin lost 1.16%. Among meme tokens, TRUMP fell 2.21%, whereas Shiba Inu gained 0.85%.
