North Fort Myers Drivers Face Detour as FDOT Begins Roadwork on Pondella Road
Motorists traveling on Pondella Road in North Fort Myers will encounter a detour starting December 1 as the Florida department of Transportation (FDOT) begins a project to reconstruct and widen a key intersection. The eastbound right-turn lanes from Pondella Road onto southbound S.R. 739 (North Tamiami Trail) will be closed at approximately 8 a.m., prompting FDOT to direct traffic along an alternate route.
The project aims to improve safety and traffic flow at the intersection, addressing drainage issues and increasing road capacity. The detour, expected to last through December, will require drivers to turn right onto River Road and than left onto Cabana Avenue to access southbound S.R. 739. The closure impacts commuters and residents in the area, potentially adding travel time during peak hours. Pedestrians are also advised to follow posted detour signage.
FDOT crews will be reconstructing the southwest quadrant of the intersection and installing new drainage structures. All scheduling is subject to change based on weather conditions or unforeseen issues. Updates on the project are available at https://www.swflroads.com/project/446293-1.
