Teh Australian music industry says that the share of streams for local artists has been in sharp decline – a trend that sparked an ‘Ausify Your Algo’ campaign by self-reliant artists to try to reverse it.
Spotify… has an option opinion. “Australian music fans love the quality, quantity, and access they have to new and local music on streaming services,” claimed the company in a blog post announcing findings from a survey of more than 4,000 Australian listeners.
“Four in five (81%) streaming users say it’s easy to find Australian artists on platform,a figure that rises among Gen Z (83%) and millennials (84%),” it continued. “A majority of listeners (61%) are satisfied with the amount of Australian music available and accessible to them.”
It’s quite the contradiction. Spotify’s study is part of its efforts to head off the potential for government-enforced quotas on how much Australian music it playlists and recommends to listeners there.
While no plans are currently afoot for that, they have been suggested in the recent past, and the Australian government recently unveiled new rules forcing video-streaming services to invest more in local content.
