Secret US-Russia Talks Aim for Ukraine Peace Plan
According to a report by Axios, the United States and Russia are engaged in secret discussions aimed at finding a resolution to the war in Ukraine. These talks involve Kremlin envoy Kirill Dmitriev, US special envoy Steve witkoff, and members of the Trump governance.
From October 24th to 26th, Dmitriev and Witkoff, along with high-ranking officials from the Trump administration, convened in Miami to discuss a detailed 28-point peace plan. Dmitriev expressed optimism following the meetings, stating he felt “that the Russian position was really being heard,” a sentiment he hadn’t experienced in previous discussions. He described the framework as aiming “How can we finally achieve lasting security in Europe, not just in Ukraine?”
Russia has historically sought meaningful concessions in peace negotiations, including Ukraine relinquishing its NATO aspirations, demilitarization, and ceding control of currently held territories.
The proposed plan, reportedly inspired by US President Donald Trump’s approach to the Gaza conflict, focuses on four key areas: peace in ukraine, security guarantees, European security, and the future of US relations with both Russia and Ukraine.
The US side is currently working to convey the “benefits” of this approach to Ukrainian and european officials. A US official confirmed the White House has begun these briefings, and Witkoff has already discussed the plan with Ukrainian security advisor Rustem Umjerov.
Dmitriev indicated both sides hope to have a written document prepared before the next scheduled meeting between President Trump and President Putin. However, a planned summit in Budapest, originally scheduled for October 25th, has been canceled by Trump.
Further complicating diplomatic efforts, a meeting between Witkoff and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyj, planned for this Wednesday in Turkey, has reportedly been postponed as Zelensky seeks to revitalize diplomatic efforts to end the war.
Dmitriev also noted that Russia is “definitely achieving further successes on the battlefield,” contributing to Moscow’s increasing influence.
