Man Found Guilty in Attempted Assassination of Former President Trump
Fort Lauderdale, Florida - A Florida jury found Dominic Routh guilty today of attempting to assassinate former President Donald Trump during a rally in October 2023. The conviction marks a notable outcome in a case that raised concerns about security surrounding political figures and the potential for politically motivated violence.
The verdict comes after a trial revealing Routh’s history of extremist views and preparations for an attack. The incident prompted an immediate Secret Service response and a heightened focus on threat assessment protocols. Routh now faces a substantial prison sentence, with the case underscoring the ongoing challenges of protecting high-profile individuals in an increasingly polarized environment. State charges of terrorism and attempted murder remain pending.
Routh, a North Carolina construction worker who had recently relocated to Hawaii, had openly discussed his plans to insert himself into global conflicts. Prior to the attempted assassination, he attempted to recruit fighters from Afghanistan, Moldova, and taiwan to join the conflict in Ukraine following Russia’s invasion.
Authorities uncovered a troubling past, including a 2002 arrest in Greensboro, North carolina, where Routh barricaded himself from police with a fully automatic machine gun and an explosive device with a 10-inch fuse. In 2010, a search of a warehouse owned by Routh revealed over 100 stolen items, ranging from power tools to kayaks. Despite these felony arrests, Routh received probation or suspended sentences in both cases.
“This attempted assassination was not only an attack on our President, but an affront to our very nation,” stated former State Attorney Pam Bondi, reflecting the gravity of the situation.
