PKP Intercity Orders New Double-Decker Trains for Gdańsk & Key Polish Routes in $1 Billion Deal
WARSAW, Poland – PKP Intercity, Poland’s national rail operator, has selected Alstom Polska to build a new fleet of double-decker trains for approximately PLN 4.1 billion (roughly $1 billion USD). The contract, announced today, aims to increase capacity and comfort on popular domestic routes, including service between Warsaw and the Tri-City (Gdańsk, Gdynia, sopot). The frist trains are expected to enter service in approximately 3.5 years.
The new trains will be capable of speeds up to 200 km/h and are designed to accommodate over 500 passengers with a focus on long-distance travel. features will include pleasant, retractable seats with individual tables, armrests, footrests, and adjustable lighting, alongside WiFi, electrical sockets, and USB ports. Dedicated spaces will be provided for families with children, cyclists, passengers with disabilities, and luggage storage.
this investment comes as PKP Intercity expands its network to connect smaller and medium-sized cities, including Suwałki, Augustów, Gorzów Wielkopolski, zielona Góra, Głogów, and Leszno, with both electrified and non-electrified lines.
Alongside the double-decker trains, PKP Intercity is also acquiring hybrid trains capable of running on both electrified and non-electrified lines. These hybrid units will feature 177 seats (156 in second class and 21 in first), air conditioning, ergonomic seating, and individual lighting. Both train types will incorporate the European ETCS train control system for enhanced safety.
