GovChat vs. WhatsApp: A David and Goliath Story Unveiled in New Book Launch
The clash between South African platform GovChat and global tech giant WhatsApp (Meta) will be the central topic of discussion at the Cape Town launch of Eldrid Jordaan’s new book, The Silicon Empire vs Social Impact: The David & Goliath Battle, on september 15, 2025.
The book details how, in early 2020, GovChat emerged as a critical solution during the COVID-19 pandemic. south Africa faced the urgent challenge of delivering essential social grants to millions while adhering to lockdown restrictions. The obstacle wasn’t a lack of funds or appropriate policy, but rather the logistical hurdle of safely and efficiently reaching those in need.
Eldrid Jordaan,a “connector” focused on accessible technology, developed govchat as an elegant response. The platform leveraged the widespread use of WhatsApp,transforming it into a direct channel for government services – eliminating the need for citizens to download a new app or navigate a complex new system.
Initially, the system proved successful, facilitating registration and enabling government response during a time of crisis. However, Meta, WhatsApp’s parent company, intervened, threatening GovChat’s operation at the height of the pandemic.
Jordaan’s story highlights a basic question about the role of private infrastructure in public service. Allowing GovChat to flourish, the book argues, would have set a precedent regarding the boundaries of corporate control over essential services.
The author stood against Meta, believing that access to vital support was paramount and that technology should serve society, not the other way around. This struggle is now chronicled in The Silicon Empire vs Social Impact.
The book launch will be held at Workshop17 (V&A Waterfront) from 17:00 for 17:30 to 19:00 on September 15, 2025, and promises a space for open discussion about power, technology, and courage.
