Get ready to look up! Astronomy enthusiasts are in for a treat this Sunday, September 7th, as a total lunar eclipse coincides with a breathtaking “blood moon.” This captivating celestial event will be particularly visible across Asia, with glimpses possible on the fringes of Europe and Africa. What causes a ‘Blood Moon‘?
The striking reddish hue that gives the “blood moon” its name occurs when the Sun, earth, and Moon align perfectly. As the Earth passes between the Sun and Moon,it casts a shadow on our lunar satellite, filtering out most direct sunlight. However, some light bends through Earth’s atmosphere and reaches the Moon, scattering away blue light and leaving behind the warmer red tones.Where to Watch:
Spectators in china and India are poised for the most breathtaking views of the total eclipse. residents of East Africa and Western Australia will also be ideally positioned to witness the event.
For European observers, the eclipse will be briefly visible during moonrise at the beginning of the evening. In mainland France, the eclipse is expected to reach its peak visibility around 8:11 p.m. local time, according to the Institute of Celestial Mechanics and Calculation of Ephemeris.
