Sha’Carri Richardson Arrested on Domestic Violence Charge; Christian Coleman Offers Support

SEATTLE, WA – July 28, 2025 – Reigning world champion sprinter Sha’Carri Richardson was arrested at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport on July 27th following an alleged domestic violence incident involving fellow athlete Christian Coleman. Authorities report Richardson is accused of physically confronting Coleman, including shoving him, pulling his backpack, and throwing an object believed to be headphones in his direction.

the arrest has sent shockwaves through the track and field world, raising questions about the potential impact on Richardson’s upcoming competitions and career. She was held for approximately 19 hours at a Washington state facility before being released.

A “Sucky Situation” – Coleman extends Grace

Speaking at the U.S. Track & Field Championships, Coleman addressed the incident, characterizing it as “a sucky situation all around.” Notably, Coleman stated he does not believe Richardson should have been arrested, emphasizing the frequently enough-emotional nature of interpersonal discussions.

“I don’t feel like she should have been arrested. I mean people have discussions and emotions and stuff like that,” Coleman said. He further highlighted the universality of personal struggles, stating, “She has things that she needs to work on for herself, of course. So do I, so does you, so does everybody.”

Coleman affirmed his commitment to offering support, stating, “I’m the type of guy who’s in the business of extending grace, and mercy and love.” He also declined to press charges, informing police he did not wish to be considered a victim and ceasing further cooperation with the inquiry.

Richardson’s Talent and Resilience

Despite the controversy, Coleman was effusive in his praise for Richardson, describing her as “a human being and a great person.” He lauded her as “the best female athlete in the world,” expressing continued admiration for her abilities and resilience in the face of past injuries.

This incident occurs as Richardson navigates a challenging period in her career. She withdrew from the 100-meter competition at the U.S. Championships following her arrest and failed to qualify for the women’s 200-meter final. However, her status as the reigning world champion from Budapest 2023 secures her an automatic berth in the 100 meters at the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo this September.

disappointment for Both Athletes

The weekend proved disappointing for Coleman as well. He failed to qualify for the world team in both the 100m and 200m, finishing fifth and sixth respectively, amidst intense media scrutiny surrounding the airport incident.

USA Track & Field has released a brief statement acknowledging awareness of the reports but has offered no further comment at this time.
