Five dead in New York City shooting, including police officer, suspect | Crime News

Manhattan Office Tower Becomes Scene of Deadly Violence

Gunman Kills Four, Including NYPD Officer, Before Being Stopped

A violent shooting rampage erupted in a Midtown Manhattan office building on Monday evening, claiming the lives of four individuals, including a decorated NYPD officer. The carnage unfolded at 345 Park Avenue, a prominent address housing major financial firms and the NFL headquarters.

Attack Unfolds on Multiple Floors

The assault began around 6 p.m. local time when surveillance footage captured a suspect, identified as 27-year-old Shane Tamura of Las Vegas, exiting a parked BMW. Armed with an M4 rifle, he entered the building’s lobby and immediately opened fire on an NYPD officer. Tamura then proceeded to the 33rd floor, leaving a trail of destruction.

“What we know so far,” said Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch, “is that surveillance video shows a male exit a double-parked black BMW on Park Avenue between 51st and 52nd streets, carrying an M4 rifle in his right hand.”

Two other victims, a woman and a security guard, were killed on the ground floor. A fourth victim was fatally shot on the 33rd floor. Another individual sustained injuries and is receiving treatment in a hospital. The motive behind this tragic event remains under active investigation.

Victims Identified as Dedicated Public Servants and Executives

Among the fallen is NYPD Officer Didarul Islam, 36, a father of two young boys whose wife is expecting their third child. Mayor Eric Adams, speaking at a press conference, lauded Officer Islam as an immigrant from Bangladesh who “moved this city” and died “saving lives” and “protecting New Yorkers.”

Law enforcement personnel secured East 50th Street between Madison and Park Avenues, the vicinity of the shooting incident in Manhattan.

The investment firm Blackstone confirmed that one of its senior executives, Wesley LePatner, also perished in the attack. LePatner held the position of senior managing director and Global Head of Core+ Real Estate, as well as CEO of Blackstone Real Estate Income Trust (BREIT).

The New York City Police Department shared a photograph of the suspect, reportedly showing him entering the building with a rifle, with media outlets. The skyscraper at 345 Park Avenue is also home to other major corporations, including KPMG and Deutsche Bank.

Broader Context of Gun Violence

This incident in Manhattan comes on the heels of another mass shooting that occurred earlier on Monday in Reno, Nevada. In that separate event, an armed individual opened fire outside a casino, resulting in three fatalities and two critical injuries before being shot by police.

In 2023, the United States experienced 36,500 gun deaths, a statistic that highlights the persistent challenge of gun violence across the nation. This latest incident in New York underscores the ongoing impact of such tragedies on communities and law enforcement.
