Trump Plans Calls wiht Putin, Zelensky Amid Escalating Ukraine Crisis
Former U.S. President Donald Trump announced plans to engage directly with both Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, along with various North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) allies, in an effort to mediate an end to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. The announcement comes amid heightened tensions and stalled peace talks between Moscow and Kyiv.
Trump’s Initiative: A Ceasefire Push
Mr. Trump conveyed his intentions via his social networking platform,Truth Social, stating that his call with Mr. Putin would focus on halting what he described as the bloodbath
in Ukraine. He expressed optimism for a productive outcome, hoping for a ceasefire and an end to the very violent war, a war that should have never happened.
Failed Talks and Escalating Violence
Mr.Trump’s announcement followed unsuccessful direct talks between Moscow and Kyiv, which failed to produce a ceasefire. President Putin had previously dismissed President Zelensky’s offer for face-to-face discussions in Turkey, proposing instead negotiations in Istanbul at a lower level, as an alternative to the full and unconditional
ceasefire demanded by ukraine and its Western allies, including the U.S.
Diplomatic Maneuvering and Potential Venues
Prior to Mr. Trump’s announcement, high-ranking diplomats from Russia and the U.S. engaged in a series of phone conversations. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio suggested the Vatican as a potential site for future Russia-Ukraine peace negotiations.
Tragedy in Bilopillia: Civilian Casualties Mount
Amid diplomatic efforts, the conflict continues to inflict a heavy toll on civilians. A north-eastern town in Ukraine declared a period of mourning after a Russian drone struck a bus evacuating civilians from front-line areas, resulting in the deaths of nine people, according to Ukrainian officials. Seven others were injured in the attack in Bilopillia, a town approximately six miles from the Russian border, with three sustaining serious injuries, according to local governor Oleh Hryhorov and Ukraine’s national police.

Zelensky’s Response: “Intentional Killing of Civilians”
President zelensky condemned the attack as a deliberate killing of civilians,
stating on the Telegram messaging app that Russians could scarcely not realize what kind of vehicle they were hitting.
Local media reported that the passengers were being evacuated from the town, with authorities working to identify the victims, primarily elderly women.
International Condemnation and Calls for Ceasefire
British Foreign Secretary David Lammy expressed his dismay at the attack, stating he was appalled.
He emphasized that If Putin is serious about peace, Russia must agree to a full and immediate ceasefire, as Ukraine has done,
in a post on X.
conflicting Narratives and Military Claims
Russia’s Defense Ministry asserted that its forces targeted a military staging area in the Sumy region, approximately 31 miles south-east of Bilopillia, without acknowledging any other attacks in the area. Meanwhile, the Washington-based Institute for the Study of War reported that Ukrainian forces have been making incremental advances into Russian territory in the Kursk region, located just north of Bilopillia.
Ongoing Hostilities and Casualties
Russian shelling, drone strikes, and airstrikes resulted in the deaths of at least five other civilians across Ukraine’s Donetsk, Kharkiv, and Kherson regions, according to local officials. Ukraine’s air force reported that Russian forces launched 62 drones overnight, with 36 being shot down and six veering off course.
Prisoner of War Exchange Agreement
Despite the lack of a ceasefire agreement, both sides agreed to exchange 1,000 prisoners of war (pows) each, marking what would be their largest swap to date, according to the heads of both delegations. ukraine’s intelligence chief, Kyrylo Budanov, indicated that the exchange could occur as early as next week.
Stance on Ceasefire and International Discussions
The Kremlin has resisted proposals from Ukraine and its Western allies for a temporary ceasefire as an initial step toward a peaceful resolution.President Zelensky stated that he had discussed the outcome of the talks with Mr. trump and the leaders of France, Germany, Britain, and Poland. He urged tough sanctions
against Moscow if it rejects a full and unconditional ceasefire and an end to killings,
in a post on X from a European leadership meeting in Albania.
