Zach Edey Undergoes Ankle Surgery, Expected to Return to Grizzlies
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Memphis Grizzlies center Zach Edey underwent successful right ankle surgery on september 27, 2025, the team announced. The procedure addressed an injury sustained during the offseason, and Edey is expected to make a full recovery, though a specific return timeline has not been established.
The surgery sidelines the 2023-24 NCAA Men’s Basketball Player of the Year as the Grizzlies begin their season, impacting their frontcourt depth. Edey, drafted 31st overall in the 2024 NBA draft, was poised to compete for playing time and contribute to a rebuilding Memphis roster. His absence during training camp and the early part of the season will require adjustments to the team’s strategy.
Edey,22,enjoyed a dominant three-year career at Purdue University,culminating in a national runner-up finish in 2024. His collegiate statistics demonstrate consistent improvement: 8.7 points and 4.4 rebounds per game in 2020-21, increasing to 14.4 points and 7.7 rebounds in 2021-22, then 22.3 points and 12.9 rebounds in 2022-23, and finally 25.2 points and 12.2 rebounds in his final season.
Prior to the injury,Edey participated in the Grizzlies’ summer league program,averaging 7.8 points and 6.2 rebounds in five games. He signed a three-year contract with Memphis in July 2024.
