trump Signals Openness to Meeting with Kim Jong Un During Asia Trip
SEOUL, SOUTH KOREA – October 25, 2025 – US President Donald Trump, currently on a multi-nation tour of Asia, has expressed a desire to meet with North Korean leader kim Jong Un, raising teh possibility of a renewed dialog between the two nations. The potential for a summit has been deemed “highly probable” by South Korean officials as Trump travels through Malaysia, Japan, and South Korea before a planned meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping.
This development arrives amid ongoing regional tensions and stalled denuclearization talks with North Korea. A meeting between Trump and Kim could represent a important shift in diplomatic efforts, perhaps restarting negotiations aimed at curbing North Korea’s nuclear programme. The last direct engagement between the two leaders occured in 2019, during Trump’s frist term in office (2017-2021). The outcome of such a meeting could have far-reaching implications for security and stability in Northeast Asia and beyond.
Trump is scheduled to arrive in Malaysia on Sunday for the Association of Southeast Asian Nations summit. He will then proceed to Tokyo on Monday to meet with Japanese Prime Minister sanae Takaichi. A visit to South Korea on Wednesday will include talks with President Lee Jae Myung, followed by a meeting with Chinese President Xi on Thursday.
When asked about the possibility of a meeting with Kim, President Trump stated, “I would like to, he knows we’ll get ther.” He added, “I don’t know. He knows I’m coming,” and affirmed,”I get along very well with him.”
South korean Unification Minister Chung Dong Young indicated his government believes a meeting is highly likely, citing “various signs” supporting the possibility. Prior to Trump’s departure for Asia, Kim Jong un reportedly conveyed having “good memories” of the US president.
