MONTEVIDEO, Uruguay – world Rugby has selected Montevideo, Uruguay, to host a stage of the SVNS World Championship Series, bringing top-tier international sevens rugby to the country for the first time. The event will take place at the Charrúa Stadium on March 21-22, 2026.
This selection marks a notable milestone for Uruguayan rugby, demonstrating growing confidence in the nation’s ability to host world-class sporting events. The Montevideo stage will be part of the second-tier SVNS2 circuit, featuring six teams vying for promotion to the core SVNS Championship Series. The announcement underscores World Rugby’s commitment to expanding the global reach of sevens rugby and developing the sport in emerging markets.
“For the Rugby Union of Uruguay it is a great pride and a great duty to host one of the SVNS stages. The great work carried out over the years has been key for World Rugby to trust our country to host an event with such high quality standards. for Los teros 7’s, the fact of playing at home will be a great incentive, while for the public of our country it will be a splendid opportunity to enjoy the best rugby in the world in a spectacular tournament, which will have both men’s and women’s rugby activity,” said Fabio Magno, President of the URU.
Uruguay’s Los Teros 7’s will compete in SVNS2 alongside Germany, the United States, and Kenya, plus the top two teams from SVNS3. the six teams will compete across three events – Nairobi, Montevideo, and Sao Paulo – with the top four finishers in each category earning qualification for the SVNS World Championship Series.
